MEDIUM: Mixed Media | Oil | Pastel | Conte | Drawing | Charcoal
SPECIALTY: ✔ Artistic Mindset & Process ✔ Color ✔ Composition

My mentorship group will focus on helping each artist discover their own particular strengths and hone them. I love helping people find what they are best at, what is unique to them, and what they have to add to the world! On the technical side, I am passionate about color and shape-finding. I will provide targeted advice and critique to help artists hone their harmonies, compositions, drawing skills, and brushwork.

Additionally, as a neurodivergent artist who is extremely familiar with the artist’s battle with creative blocks, I have a huge interest in helping painters tackle the same internal battles. Whether it’s strategies for overcoming perfectionism, finding ways to overcome procrastination and get in the studio more often, or making sure we have systems in place to prevent burnout, I love talking about the creative process and all of the ways we can get out of our own way and leave room for play.

Overall, artists in my group can expect an open and supportive environment that meets them where they are in their artist journey. Through critiques, group discussions, and tailored advice I will help artists find out what is blocking their creativity. Whether it’s advising on technique, tips about studio practices or supplies, or mindset tweaks, my goal is to help everyone spend more time feeling joyful and creative in the studio.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artwork by Michaela Hoppe

Raised in the Southwest and now living in Bozeman, Montana, my work explores the wild textures and colors of the Western United States. I’ve been fascinated by the natural world for as long as I can remember, sometimes spending hours watching lizards and picking desert flowers as a child, and I try to bring that same wonder to my work.

For my larger pieces I work in mixed oil media and cold wax, and for my smaller pieces I work in layered resin with mixed media. I love spending time drawing, finding interesting textures, and pushing the abstract – each piece seems to take on a life of it’s own. My main goal is to take an image and find something new and beautiful in it, showing you a horse or a flower in an entirely new way.

I have been painting and teaching full time since 2009 and my work has won numerous awards, including the 2011 Oil Painters of America Western Regional Award of Excellence and the 2019 Buffalo Bill Art Show 2-Dimensional Award, and in 2011 Southwest Art Magazine selected me as one of “21 Under 31 Artists to Collect Now.” I’ve exhibited in museums, auctions, and juried shows throughout the west and my work is collected throughout the US and Canada.
