MEDIUM: Acrylic | Mixed Media | Watercolor
SPECIALTY: ✔ Business ✔ Technique

This group will focus on ways to developing a loose, expressive painting style in water-based media.Although this group will cover mainly watercolour, painters who work in acrylics or gouache, and want to develop a looser style will also benefit from the discussion and the work. We will be discussing techniques in water-based media (watercolour, inks, linework) to build loose watercolour expertise. The focus will be on learning to develop compositions and harness the strengths of the medium to create compelling paintings. The approach is suitable for those wishing to paint figurative loose watercolours as well as anyone wanting to develop abstraction in their work.

We will discuss ways of stepping back and evaluating our own work, and methods of moving forward when artists feel stuck. Along the way, we will cover colour theory and mark making to ensure every artist has the tools and the development space to uncover their own unique style. In the safe environment of a supportive group, we will unpack the fears we all face when creating art, and learn to accept the wabi-sabi philosophy of embracing the perfection of imperfections. There’s nothing more thrilling than the emergence of a spontaneous brushstroke at just the right moment. I have a relaxed mentoring style which helps artists to counter any fearful qualms they might experience.

As an art educator, my purpose is to help you to find greater joy in embracing the unknowns in your art practice by enhancing your knowledge, and supporting you as you build a more confident body of work. Together we will uncover the beauty of abstractions.

My experience in business means I can also discuss elements of pricing, and the business of art in our mentoring sessions. The art of presenting your work with confidence is key to building a successful online sales channel. Discussions about exhibition opportunities, social media and marketing open studios are all areas we can explore.

This group is for anyone who loves loose, expressive watercolour work, and who wants to approach their art practice with curiosity and an open mind in order to increase the joy of building an art business.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

Vandy Massey is an English painter with roots firmly planted in the vibrant landscapes of South Africa where she was raised. The echoes of Africa are woven into her art, influencing the way she infuses her work with vibrant energy. She is inspired by the expanse of landscapes and the untamed beauty of natural spaces.

At the heart of her loose and expressive paintings lies a signature style that features strong colour and texture. It’s a style that evolves organically, shaped by an ongoing dance of experimentation with fresh techniques and varied mediums. This naturally led her to increase the expressive elements of her work, meeting the challenges of abstraction in watercolours.

She still finds the fluidity and liberating essence of watercolour captivating to work with: harnessing its ebb and flow to emphasis its freshness and translucent beauty . She loves the way the paint has a life of its own and thrives on the perpetual tensions between the artist and this medium.

The desire to push the boundaries of her creative expression has moved her to include other mediums into her portfolio of artwork.

Vandy chaired the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists for four years. She strengthened the society’s strategic links with the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Institute for Painters in Water Colours. She teaches popular workshops on experimental watercolours, landscapes and flowers in loose watercolour.

Throughout the course of her artistic career, Vandy has sought out tutors who have reached a level of excellence in their field. She has worked with painters from across Europe and the UK to continue to develop technical proficiency. She believes we are never too experienced to learn something new.

Vandy’s work has been selected for national level exhibitions in the UK and has private collectors across the world.
