The No-BS Guide
to Social Media for Artists
WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER
By Julie deBoer

“Social media isn’t about going viral—it’s about showing up, sharing your journey, and connecting with the people who truly resonate with your art.”
I know, I know, you probably have a love-hate relationship with social media. So do I! But here’s the thing… It’s the perfect tool for artists, it’s designed to connect people through visual story-telling… isn’t that the essence of what we do through our artwork?
We simply need to learn how to tell our story and share our process in a way that feels natural, not forced or faked.
We tackle social media for artists regularly in our weekly webinars (want to come for free for a month?) because it’s such an easy way to get our work OUT THERE for the world to see.
Use it with intention and it will become the historical record of your journey as an artist. What a beautiful thing to create and share.
But let’s be real: it can feel overwhelming. Platforms change, algorithms shift, and it’s easy to feel like you’re shouting into the void. The good news? You don’t have to be everywhere or follow every trend. I’m going to break it down so you can use social media effectively—without it taking over your creative time.
Pick One and Make It Shine!
Not every platform is right for every artist, so choose what works best for you. Here’s the top 4 for artists:
- INSTAGRAM is your digital gallery—a place to showcase your work, share behind-the-scenes moments, and direct people to your website or shop.
- TIK TOK is where storytelling thrives. If you love sharing your creative process, studio life, and inspirations, then short, engaging videos can make your audience feel like part of your world.
- YOUTUBE is perfect for long-form content. Whether it’s tutorials, vlogs, or deep dives into your process, it helps build lasting connections, Plus, YouTube Shorts let you repurpose content from TikTok or Instagram to expand your reach.
- PINTEREST is the slow burn that keeps on giving. Unlike posts that disappear in a day, Pinterest keeps your work circulating for months or years. It’s a great tool for driving traffic to your website and online shop.
Make Social Media Work for You
—Not the Other Way Around
Rather than treating social media as a chore, think of it like Alex Garant does, she’s one of our Master Artists who’s also an Influencer. She spoke at our last webinar on this topic (that you could have come to for free, stop missing out and grab a base membership).
“The best tip I can tell people is to see your social media as a documentary about yourself…like you’re filming about your life and creative process as an artist.” Alex Garant – Master Artist & Influencer

It’s tempting to follow trends, but authenticity matters more. Instead of feeling pressure to follow the masses, choose trends that align with your artistic style and personality. If a trending song or visual format fits your work, use it—but always stay true to your voice and story.
Stop Chasing “Likes”
“The single biggest message I can leave you with is find ways to get people to your website, build your email distribution list. Because, no matter what else happens, you have that!” – Lori Meeboer – Mastrius Mentor

Unlike social platforms, your website and mailing list BELONG TO YOU, making them your most valuable asset, that no algorithm can influence and no one can take away.
No matter how many platforms you use, your website should be your HOME BASE. Social media trends come and go, but your website should be the steady foundation where collectors, buyers, and fans can always find you. Directing traffic there helps build an engaged email list—a direct line to your most dedicated followers.
Use social media as a tool
—not as the goal
The best part? You’re in control. Use social media in a way that feels right for you, don’t let it take over your life or distract you, but let it be a BRIDGE to opportunities that support your long-term goals as an artist.
Wish you had known this sooner? You could have. All this info is from our last live event on social media. We do an event every week and you can come for free, just grab the Base Membership and get your questions answered, while learning from the best of the best, in real-time!
