MEDIUM: Quiltmaking | Textiles
SPECIALTY: ✔ Color ✔ Gallery Representation ✔ Technique & Demos

Sue Wademan is one of New Zealand’s leading textile artists and she has taught her unique Fabric Collage classes around the world. In eight different cities of Japan, four states of America, Italy, France Germany and Denmark in Europe, all over the UK, in her homeland Australia, and also around her now ‘adopted’ land of New Zealand… even in South Africa!

Sue was initially exhibiting her creative textile artworks in the world of quilt makers, but when she moved to Queenstown, New Zealand in the year 2000, it was the perfect time to the launch her art into the fine art world. At first there was a little resistance to acknowledge textiles as a valid medium to create pictures with, but over the past 23 years things have slowly changed and Sue has won more than twelve local Art Awards for what she calls her ‘fabric paintings’.

MENTORSHIP GROUP FOCUS

The focus of my group is how to learn to use textiles creatively. Artists can expect to learn all sorts of textile manipulation techniques to create an image that has emotion, through use of color, and depth, through the use of tonal value. I call my technique fabric collage. It’s not so much about the sewing, it’s about the fabric!

I support artists in their growth by sharing with them my experience as a textile artist who has left the ‘quilting’ forum to navigate the Fine Arts arena.

We will talk about how to present their artwork for exhibitions and how to approach galleries. How to manage time and resources. We will have a great time!

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artwork by Michaela Hoppe

Sue was initially trained as a commercial artist in the 70’s doing many night time art courses and working in some prestigious advertising art studios in Sydney and London. In the late 70’s her three children took over her life for 12 years during which she dabbled in pottery, puppetry and early childhood teaching.

Once Sue was introduced to contemporary quilt making in the early 90’s her obsession for fabric and the way it could be created into amazing imagery began.

Now, her inspiration comes from the beauty of the alpine village where she now lives in the South Island of New Zealand. It’s been said that Sue’s artworks are ‘jewel like images, an expression of her love for the environment around her’.
