• Beyond Realism: Finding Your Voice
• What happens when technical skill is no longer the goal—but the beginning of something deeper?
• In this mentorship, we’ll explore how to move beyond simply painting what you see and create work that communicates something personal, emotional, and meaningful. We’ll explore depth, atmosphere, symbolism, artistic license, and visual storytelling—and how these elements can transform a technically strong painting into a compelling work of art.
• Drawing from my Watercolor Depth & Realism book and my Smoke and Mirrors series, I’ll share demonstrations, creative approaches, and individualized feedback to help you push your work in new directions.
• While much of my own work is in watercolor and watermedia, all painting media are welcome. Bring your ideas, reference photos, works in progress, and questions. This is a space to experiment, take creative risks, and develop your own artistic voice.
• For artists ready to move beyond “How do I paint this?” and begin asking, “What do I want this painting to say?”
• Come explore the space between skill and soul, realism and expression.

Mentorship Focus

1. To see like an artist — discover what to notice, emphasize, simplify, and leave out to create stronger paintings.
2. To create depth and atmosphere — use value, edges, color, contrast, and composition to make your work feel dimensional and alive.
3. To transform your references — use artistic license to change, combine, exaggerate, or invent elements in service of your vision.
4. To strengthen your creative process — move from idea to finished painting with greater intention, confidence, and freedom.
5. To find your artistic voice — develop work that reflects your ideas, emotions, and point of view rather than simply reproducing what’s in front of you.

How This Mentorship Works

• Live online small-group mentorship
• Monthly two-hour session with your mentor where you’ll receive feedback, teaching, and personal support from your mentor
• Mentor assigns homework so you can practice the skills you’re learning and get feedback on your results
• Meet mid-month with your group for informal connection
• Private group chat between sessions
