What you will learn in this mentorship

Develop a Deeper Understanding of Portraiture and Figurative Art

This mentorship is an inspiring, hands-on introduction to portraiture and the figurative, with a strong focus on composition, placement, proportion, and developing original ideas with a narrative. You’ll learn how to interpret, refine, and transform your ideas into expressive artworks.

Importantly, you’ll learn how to observe from life: what to include and what to leave out. We will discuss how to begin a work, what you want to express, how to communicate with subjects, and how to find your end game.

You’ll learn how to light your subject to show form, use tonal values to create dimension, and train your eye not to rely on photographic reference alone. We will delve into identifying problems and importantly, how to solve them through regular critique, group discussion and study exercises.

With me as your mentor, you’ll have the opportunity to bounce ideas around, experiment, ask questions, and develop your work within a supportive class environment. Along the way, you’ll strengthen your fundamental fine-art skills, colour-mixing and application while exploring different approaches to creating engaging and confident artwork.

But creating great art is only part of the journey. You’ll also discover what it takes to present, promote, and sell your work professionally—from building a strong artistic identity and online presence to social media, website presentation, branding, point-of-sale materials, and approaching commissions with confidence.

Whether you’re just beginning your artistic journey or looking to take your existing skills and creative practice further, this mentorship is about developing your full art studio, finding your voice, and learning how to bring your work into the world.
