Oil | Graphite | Mixed Media | Gouache | Sculptor and Light Metals
As an artist who draws inspiration from materials, I am interested in exploring the connections between what is present, physical and what is illusion as it relates to nature and scientific inquiry through both two and three dimensions. My work is not tied to social or political issues but rather driven by curiosity to explore possibilities, how things work, and to create work that generates questions. What forces are at work within a piece? How do components move, interact, generate gesture, realize stability? These physical ideas are present for me in the making of a piece, as are the references to history through shape and form and to emotional connection. I hope similar feelings and responses are generated within my audience, allowing them to see, to question if and how these pieces resonate with them. I could wax on about interrelationships between form and the human condition or draw reference to the impact of global warming and how it affects components within the paintings, but these concepts go beyond the simplicity of my desire to make objects that speak to me and share them with others in hopes that they may also find questions or answers by viewing the work.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

The enormous variety of form and structure within the natural environment, as well as the connection between art and science, has drawn me to explore beneath the surface. Delving into the unobserved layers of our lives, developing an ongoing fascination with the world at a microscopic level, I am interested in capturing the essence of cellular structures that evade the naked eye and imbuing them with anthropomorphic qualities. In looking at complex matrixes and zeroing in on individual cell structures, exploring and expanding on relationships of color, gritty, tactile textures, seeing them as immense, I can then render them on a small scale. The cells of eukaryotes (protozoa, plants, animals) are highly structured and have developed specialized packaging and transport mechanisms that are simulated within my paintings. Gouache, an opaque water based medium, is a wonderful vehicle with which I can build lush color contrasts, play with pattern and texture and still create fine linear details within a given piece. As these compositions unfold and multiply, I am drawn to discover more about what lies beneath, within, and bring it to light.
