MEDIUMS: Drawing | Gouache | Oil
SPECIALTY:  Technique

I want to share what helps me in creating landscape paintings that are successful in design and composition. I strive to combine good design while pushing color to express an emotional response to a scene. My process for painting landscapes is painting outdoors, bringing those color notes and sketch ideas to use in the studio to work up into larger paintings. I use a combination of drawing, plein air studies, and photos to achieve this.

I look forward to listening to members that have questions regarding either the studio process, or plein air process. Neither approach exclusively, but also not mandatory to do both. I just feel to do successful landscape paintings, one must study from direct observation in the field, and to apply what is learned in that process. I also want to teach others the importance of when to detect where corrections need to be made in their own work, and how to approach those corrections successfully.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

John Lintott In Action

“My love for the outdoors has brought me to a lifelong obsession with seeking out new places to paint.  I have been painting for almost 30 years, but in the last 4 or 5 years, I have become inspired more and more by how light hits different environments. The effect that light has on an area is fascinating to me.  Depending on time of day or time of year, it is amazing that the same place can look so different.

I have found that the more I focus on light in my work, the more my ability to describe different scenes becomes a pure lesson in color and value.  This is a lesson that I intend to explore in order to further my understanding of the natural world around me, the capabilities of my materials, and the limits of my abilities.  With these lessons, I feel like every day I paint is like my first time painting, and I’m able to retain a deep passion and curiosity of what the possibilities are.”

John Lintott lives in Grand Junction, Colorado with his wife Emily and their three daughters. He worked at Colorado National Monument Association for 8 years organizing the park’s Monuments and Canyons Plein Air Event, but now paints full-time from his studio at home. John has painted in numerous plein air events including three years in the Zion National Park Plein Air Invitational, twice in the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art, the Sedona Plein Air Festival, Snowmass, Aspen, Moab, and many more. John’s work has also been selected for the 2020 and 2021 Oil Painters of America Western Regional Exhibition, the 2021 and 2022 Oil Painters of America National Exhibition and has exhibited in the Colorado Governor’s Art Show in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023. In early 2022 John was invited to become a signature member of the Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA), and in 2024 John was accepted as an Out-of-State Artist Member of the California Art Club.
