Does goal setting really work? I doubt it š¤„
Finding your JOY is not a selfish pursuit,
itās a world changing decision!
“Work as hard as you can, imagine immensities, donāt compromise, and donāt waste time. Start now. Not twenty years from now, not two weeks from now. Now.ā
~ Debbie Millman
We have just set out on another journey around the sun. Happy New Year everyone!
The new year is the time weāre supposed to talk about GOALS, GOALS, GOALS! But to be perfectly honest, Iāve always found goal setting to be a terribly dry and boring topic.
Goal setting is something Iāve always resisted becauseā¦ wellā¦ thatās for other artists, you know, the ones who arenāt reaching their goals. š¬
Then I took an honest look at my life and art and tried it. It took 30 minutes andā¦
wait for it…
I wrote my goals down. š²
Andā¦BAM! My studio practice changed.
Something MAGICAL and POWERFUL happened when I wrote down a few simple goals. I kid you not!
Within days I found myself painting more, with purpose and focus, feeling more optimistic, and surprisingly less stressed.
I felt the weight of expectation lift off my shoulders and the joy of creating found itās way back into my studio. How can something so simple have had so much impact?
āSetting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.ā
~ Tony Robbins
It got me thinking about the power of intention, writing goals down is an act of intention, itās like planting seeds of actual, real, potential.
The act of physically recording your goals sets a chain of events in motion.
As you stride into the new year, take a moment to IMAGINE your future. The next week, month, 6 months, can you envision the changes you want to see in your work, your mindset, your studio practice?
š© Hereās the kickerā¦ these are YOUR goals, not the goals you think you should have, not the goals your friends/collectors/galleries have for you, not the goals other artists have for themselves, this is not a list of to-dos or responsibilities, these are YOUR ACTUAL, DEFINABLE GOALS, based on your hopes, dreams, preferences, and boundaries.
IMAGINE YOUR FUTURE.
- What does your morning routine look like?
- What skills have you improved or acquired?
- Where is your art hanging?
- How do you feel about your work?
I invite you, no I urge you, to create a list of goals, of progress, growth, and change you truly want to become your reality.
Think big or think small, itās up to you.
At Mastrius, weāre a community of dreamers who get sh*t done!
Weāve learned the importance of leaning into our hopes for the future, because pursuing our dreams and passions is a way to show up and really engage with this life and with each other, in the most real and honest way. And itās where we find our JOY. And when we find our joy, we heal, we grow, and the world becomes a better place. Truly.
Thereās purpose to our work.
