Artistic Process & Mindset ✔ Creating Bodies of Work ✔ Finding your Artistic Voice (Narrative)

A mentorship group led by me would focus on guiding artists through the complexities of building a sustainable and successful career while staying true to their artistic voice. With over 20 years of experience exhibiting internationally, receiving prestigious awards like the Prize for Creativity and multiple Pollock Krasner Foundation Grants, and navigating the art world largely on my own, I understand the creative and business challenges of being an artist. This mentorship would help artists develop their work conceptually, refine their professional presentation, and strategically position themselves within the art world—whether that means securing gallery representation, preparing for museum exhibitions, or cultivating a collector base.

Artists in this program can expect one-on-one guidance,
group critiques, and practical strategies tailored to their individual goals. We will cover essential topics like developing a cohesive body of work, writing strong artist statements and proposals, pricing work effectively, and navigating relationships with galleries and collectors. Just as importantly, we’ll discuss the emotional and psychological aspects of being a working artist—overcoming self-doubt, handling rejection, and staying motivated in an unpredictable field. With my background in both abstract expressionism and large-scale installations, I can also offer insights into how to conceptualize, execute, and present ambitious projects that resonate deeply with audiences and institutions.

My goal is to create a supportive, honest, and inspiring space where artists not only receive actionable advice but also feel empowered to take bold steps in their careers. Whether you are seeking to establish yourself, break into new markets, or transition to museum-level exhibitions, I will share the strategies, insights, and hard-earned lessons that have shaped my own career. Together, we will push your work and career forward, ensuring that you not only create meaningful art but also build a strong foundation for long-term success. I also have knowledge of some public art programs (I served as an Arts Commissioner for the city for 11 years) and I am knowledgable about grants and residencies.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST

Lana Cease

Todd Williamson is an internationally recognized contemporary artist known for his abstract works that explore color, light, and perception through layered and gestural techniques. His paintings often integrate elements of music, reinforcing a deep emotional and sensory experience for viewers. His work has been showcased in prestigious exhibitions worldwide and is held in both private and corporate collections.

A major milestone in Williamson’s career was his official exhibition at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019, one of the most prestigious contemporary art events in the world. In 2020, he was awarded the Prize for Creativity from the Pollock Krasner Foundation, a distinguished recognition of his artistic innovation. He has also received multiple foundation grants, including a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, further solidifying his influence in the contemporary art world. His contributions have been acknowledged internationally, including letters of recognition from two German Prime Ministers.

Williamson’s impact extends beyond exhibitions, with his work being selected for the Arch Mission Lunar Library Permanent Archive on the Moon, ensuring a lasting artistic legacy. His paintings, described as both monolithic and deeply expressive, continue to captivate audiences and critics alike.

Through his commitment to abstraction and immersive artistic experiences, Williamson remains at the forefront of contemporary art, pushing the boundaries of perception and emotion in his work.

Artist Statement:

I approach each painting as an exploration of the interplay between art, sound, and perception, aiming to engage viewers on a deeply emotional level. My process is highly tactile and layered, involving sanding, grinding, scraping, and precise brushwork to achieve an intricate balance of texture and light. By applying and then removing multiple thin layers of paint—often within a near-monochromatic palette—I reveal the subtle colors and complexities underneath, transforming each piece into a quiet yet striking narrative.

My work strives to create spaces for reflection. I harness the tension between controlled techniques and the inherent unpredictability of my materials, resulting in scenes that hint at landscapes while maintaining their abstract essence. Through contrasts of color, depth, and finish, every painting tells a story—one rooted in the push and pull of light and shadow. Frequent collaborations with musicians reflect my interest in the symbiosis of color and sound, and how these two forms of expression can soothe our often-turbulent world. By merging these elements, my practice aspires to inspire introspection and encourage a gentle questioning of the status quo.
