Successful Commissions: Remove Uncertainty & Enjoy the Process!

Creating custom artwork for friends, fans, and collectors can feel overwhelming and confusing.

Are COMMISSIONS worth the effort and how do you approach them with confidence and professionalism?

If you've ever faced uncertainty around commissions, like how to start, how to interpret another person’s vision for your art, follow a clear process, guard your creative integrity, and choose an appropriate timeline and pricing, you're not alone.

Join Mastrius Mentors Kaye Freeman and Julie deBoer for a live, interactive panel where they’ll break down the realities of taking on commissions.

You’ll get practical strategies straight from their own experiences and leave knowing how to set yourself up for success to ensure commissioned work is a joyful process for both you and your collectors.

You'll learn how to:

  • Weigh the benefits and challenges of commissioned work
  • Ask the right questions to understand your collectors vision, before you say yes
  • Create clear expectations that support both you, your creative integrity, and your collector
  • Build a step-by-step process you can follow so every commission is streamlined and successful

Meet Kaye Freeman

Acrylic | Coloured Pencil | Drawing | Graphite | Ink

Kaye Freeman explores the symbiosis of organic matter in the natural world while also investigating patriarchal impact on gender and habitat.

Her work utilizes painting, drawing, performance and film to describe the micro and macro of interconnections between environment, the self and nature. The intension behind each artwork often dictates the medium used. The relationships between colors, shapes and composition is at the for front of all the work.

Freeman constantly pushes boundaries, norms and even acceptability and possibilities in order to keep the work fresh and relevant for our shared human experience at this moment in history.

A multi-award-winning artist, Freeman’s practice ranges from drawing and painting to performance and making short films. Most recently, she was awarded the Jurors Prize for her monolithic drawing at the Annual Brand Works on Paper, presented and curated by the renowned Los Angeles art critic Shana Nys Dambrot at the Brand Library and Arts Center in Glendale.

Meet Julie deBoer

Acrylic

My life is art. It’s about the creation of art, the support of artists, and impacting the world positively through art. I believe in and am building a non-competitive community at Mastrius, where artists can grow their skills and pursue their passions together, because…

ART is powerful and purposeful. It is not about making pretty things to hang on the wall, to match the curtains. Art changes our perspective and opens us up to something much deeperhigher, and grander than ourselves.

Creating unique impressions of the world as I see and experience them, is life-giving to me, and it seems, to those who enjoy my work. I am a deep-welled person, sensitive in every way a person can be, which heightens my awareness and ability to connect with people through my art. Though it also makes life more painful, it also makes it more beautiful and I’m grateful for it.
