Join Mastrius Mentors Ashley Gaboury and Carol Strock Wasson for an engaging session that demystifies color theory and shows you how to use it as a tool for artistic clarity. Through personal examples and practical guidance, they’ll help you use color more intentionally to shape emotion, space, and story in your work.
You’ll explore how to improve CONTROL and CONFIDENCE with color through:
- Understanding the Color Wheel and relationships between primary, secondary, and tertiary hues
- Breaking down hue, value, and intensity to see how they affect visual impact
- Creating harmony and tension through complementary, analogous, and triadic schemes
- Leveraging contrast and pigment knowledge to bring depth and dimension to your compositions
This session offers the insight and structure you need to make your colors work harder for you. Walk away with practical tools and a deeper awareness of how to use color with clarity, purpose, and impact in every piece you create.

This mentorship group is designed to help tap into the power of working from your intuition. At the heart of artmaking is problem-solving, and cultivating your inner creative compass is just as crucial as developing technical skills. This group will invite emerging artists to explore the creative process through an intuitive lens, fostering growth and self-expression.
In this immersive program we’ll explore mark-making and experiment with a variety of techniques to find balance between stylized realism and abstraction. This hands-on session is designed to push boundaries and allow you to break the rules, tapping into the essence of your unique artistic practice.
We’ll focus on layering mediums, creating dynamic compositions, and developing personalized color palettes to express your true artistic voice. This group will guide you through exercises that challenge convention and inspire new directions in your work. Together, we’ll explore what’s at the core of your art practice, helping you unlock new levels of creativity. Come ready to deconstruct, discover, and reimagine your approach to art!
Meet Carol Strock Wasson
Pastel
My commitment as a teacher of pastels is to provide you with the fundamental skills that will motivate you to stop duplicating the photo or landscape and show you how to deviate from reality and nurture your artistic inspiration.
The fundamental skills I cover are composition, value structure, temperature, and color harmony. I will also show how to use tools, brayers, squeegees, clear gesso, and alcohol to aid in creating layers of colors in pastel. Each session begins with personalized guidance and feedback on your work. A PDF of the lesson will provide examples of historical and contemporary artists.
Exercises/challenges are given at the end of each class and are designed to stretch your creative powers.
