Tips to Catch the Juror’s Eye

Join renowned watercolor artists and Mastrius Mentors Lorraine Watry and Carrie Waller for a live, interactive panel focused on preparing your work for juried exhibitions

Even strong paintings can be overlooked if they don’t present with impact, clarity, or cohesion. So, how can you level-up the quality of your work to catch the juror’s eye?

This session is designed to help you recognize what makes a painting stand out in a competitive field. From refining your compositions to making post-finish adjustments, Lorraine and Carrie will guide you through key decisions to ensure your work doesn’t get passed over but gets noticed!

You’ll learn how to:

  • Strengthen composition and value structure for maximum visual impact
  • Apply the rule of three to enhance visual harmony and flow
  • Self-critique your work with a juror’s perspective in mind
  • Choose, adjust, and present your best work with intention and clarity

There will also be time for Q&A throughout the panel, so bring your questions, hesitations, and curiosities—our mentors are here to support your growth!

As always, Mastrius events are LIVE & INTERACTIVE!

Meet Lorraine Watry

Watercolor

“I paint a variety of subjects, but a theme of reflective, shiny objects runs throughout a lot of my watercolors. Reflective objects like water, glass, and metal hold a fascination for me and I am drawn to the unusual, abstract shapes that are often in realistic subjects. These abstract shapes are a nice counterpoint to a bird, band instrument, or waterlily.”

Lorraine Watry earned her Bachelor of Fine Art Degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She lives and works in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Lorraine teaches workshops and classes, and gives demonstrations in person and online.

Lorraine is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and the 2022/2023 Vice President and Newsletter Director. She is also a signature member of the Rocky Mountain National Watercolor Society, American Women Artists, the Colorado Watercolor Society, and the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society. Lorraine’s paintings have been juried into many national and international exhibitions.

Lorraine is an award-winning artist focusing on waterscapes, wildlife, and reflective objects. She has worked with watercolor for more than 28 years and is in her 14th year of teaching watercolor classes and workshops.

Meet Carrie Waller

Watercolor

“I have always had a fascination with watercolor. The difficulty of the medium challenges me and the transparent layering can not be replicated with any other medium.

Conceptualizing the perfect painting in my head, the hunt for the props, setting up my finds in the a dramatic composition utilizing natural lighting and seeing my idea come to life. My intention is for the viewer to be captivated by the beauty and light of the piece and for it to give them an amazing visual experience. My goal is to make the ordinary, extraordinary.”

Carrie Waller is a watercolor artist working in a realistic, detailed style. Her training in Interior Design and her studies in Graphic design as well as her time living in Europe and Asia have influenced her as an artist. Her unique works are bold, vibrant and dramatic.

Carrie is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, San Diego Watercolor Society, Louisiana Watercolor Society, Mid-Southern Watercolorists Women In Watercolor, and Watercolor USA Honor Society. She teaches workshops and private classes.
