Painting outdoors is a fun and rewarding experience, but it can be challenging to stay focused and confident in your process due to shifting light, limited time, and ever-changing weather.

This panel brings together Mastrius Mentors Gaye Adams and Barbara Mulleneaux to guide you through a clear and practical approach to plein-air painting, helping you make stronger decisions with intention and structure from the moment you arrive on location.

In this panel, you’ll explore how to:

  • Choose a location that supports a strong composition
  • Block in colors & values quickly and effectively
  • Manage your limited time as light and conditions shift
  • Stay focused and flexible throughout the painting process

Painting in the open air is a popular practice for many artists because it improves the quality of one’s work quickly. It improves an artist's ability to see and understand color and value relationships, in light and shadow. It’s also fun and a great way to connect with other artists.

Meet Barbara Mulleneaux

Acrylic | Oil

“I have spent many hours outdoors creating studies that range from resolved paintings to visual notes- some complete themselves, while others serve as references beside photos and memory for studio work. The studio becomes a place of reflection, where emotinal responses are deciphered.

Careful design, brushwork, and deliberate decisions are intentional. The clock slows down.

What I learn in the studio will inform my next outdoor painting and in turn, each plein air experience will reshape my studio work. It is a continuous, circular relationship.”

Barbara has been painting the old barrios and landscape of the southwest for many years. She is an invited, award winning Plein air painter in both regional and national competitions and exhibitions.

She did a 1 month residency at Ghost Ranch (Georgia O’Keeffe), New Mexico. Her featured articles include “Outdoor Painter” and “Southwest Art”. She teaches workshops in Arizona and New Mexico.  Barbara also juries and judges shows.

She is a member of Plein Air Painters New Mexico, Arizona Plein Air Painters, American Impressionist Society, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society and Signature member of the Sonoran Plein Air Painters.

Her work is represented in Tucson, Sedona and Tubac galleries.

Meet Gaye Adams

Oil | Pastel

I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. And it has always brought me a sense of satisfaction and joy.

My paintings are not difficult to understand; they are merely an exploration of that which brings me joy, and makes my heart skip a beat. That is the experience I wish to share with those who view my paintings – to stir the imagination and quicken the spirit, and transport to a wild and interesting place.

The single most compelling aspect of art making for me is creating the illusion of light with mere paint. It is always a challenge and is always engaging. That alchemy for me is pretty heady stuff.

In addition to painting, I enjoy a lovely connection with those looking to shorten their learning curve by studying with me. Turns out I really enjoy sharing my passion, and love to take students on my plein-air adventures in particular. Check out my workshops page if that is something that sounds appealing to you.
