Join us for an interactive session where you'll get valuable teaching and insights from Master Artists, Steve Puttrich and Barbara Schilling, to strengthen your composition and color skills. Learn how to quickly REFINE your work so that you can create COMPELLING narratives, and convey EMOTION in your work.
Both Steve and Barbara will be using PHOTOSHOP to demonstrate their suggested tweaks and adjustments to the artwork submitted, to level up each piece! They will teach you how to improve your use of COLOR and create balance and interest with strong COMPOSITIONS for powerful results in your artwork, that you can put into practice immediately.
Here's what you’ll learn:
- The collaborative relationship between color and value.
- Strategies to direct the viewer’s eye into your painting and keep them there
- How to capture viewers' attention and imagination
- When to follow or break the rules of composition for impactful storytelling.

- Five pieces will be selected for live critique during this event.

Meet Steve Puttrich
Steve Puttrich started his studies at the American Academy of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He received his degrees in architectural illustration, graphic design, and fine art. Steve studied watercolor painting under the Academy’s Director, Irving Shapiro, and Oil Painting under Eugene Hall. After a 35-year career as an artist, designer, and Vice President of Creative Services and Innovation for Parsons Corporations. Steve and his wife Bobbie Puttrich, also a fine artist, are now enjoying painting full-time around the country. Steve is also teaching at Chicago’s Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Art. At the Morton Arboretum and Chicago Botanic Garden. Steve enjoys demonstrating his craft throughout various local venues and has won several awards in Plein Air Painting events as well as quick painting competitions. Steve is currently the Artist in Residence for the Plein Air Painters of Chicago. He is represented by Castle Gallery in Fort Wayne, IN, Main Street Art Gallery in Lake Zurich, IL, and the Unintended Curator Gallery in Culver, IN.
Meet Barbara Schilling
Oil Master
I feel mastering color is a huge factor in a successful painting. Covering three basic elements value, temperature, and hue.
First, learning to see the value of a color, then understanding the relationships of temperature, and learning to mix beautiful grays.
There will be easy-to-understand critiques using Photoshop to illustrate adjustments and changes to a student’s work.
Discussions, demos, and info will all help to guide their progress.
