What you will learn in this mentorship

• Let there be light!
• From the time I first started painting, I was drawn to paintings that conveyed a strong sense of illumination. Whether I paint landscape or still life, it’s always about the light. I am excited to share what I’ve learned with you.
• As a “Late Bloomer Artist”, I did not come to painting with the skills that are so important for a successful painting. Moreover, I found it overwhelming to try to think about composition, drawing, values, color, brushwork, and edges, all at the same time. My technique has evolved to allow me to focus on just one of these concepts at a time, and I would love to share that with you.
• As a group, we will do some “deep dives” into each of these ideas, developing these important skills to be able to put them all together to create light filled paintings. We will be working from life with still life subjects, but the techniques and concepts will be equally applicable to landscape, portraiture, interiors, etc. Class time will consist of discussion, demos, and the occasional Power Point to illustrate ideas.
• We’ll work on:
• Composition: How to grab the viewer’s eye and draw them into your painting, regardless of subject matter
• Drawing: Tools for the rest of us! How to create an accurate drawing, yet remain loose in style.
• Values: Yes, color gets all the credit, but value does all the work. Nail this.
• Color: Learn how to mix almost any color you see with a limited palette. This does not have to be a struggle.
• Brushwork: Your painting language- Learn how to put down color confidently, and show “the artist’s hand” in your final painting.
• Edges: What differentiates and advanced painter from a beginner.

Mentorship Focus

1. First, and foremost, to have the confidence that you can grow and improve as an artist, no matter when you started painting.
2. To create compelling, narrative, intimate, and emotional still life designs.
3. The importance of values in creating a sense of illumination in your paintings, and the tools to make this happen.
4. To mix color fearlessly with a limited palette.
5. To love the life of an artist- the way we look at the world and see beauty everywhere, and the joy and blessing of connecting with each other.

How This Mentorship Works

• Live online small-group mentorship
• Monthly two-hour session with your mentor where you’ll receive feedback, teaching, and personal support from your mentor
• Mentor assigns homework so you can practice the skills you’re learning and get feedback on your results
