What you will learn in this mentorship
I mentor emerging painters who are ready to move beyond simply learning how to make a painting and begin discovering what makes their work distinctly their own.
My approach is rooted in more than twenty years as a professional mixed-media painter, but I am especially interested in the creative thinking that happens underneath the work: Why are you drawn to certain subjects, colors, materials, marks, or ideas? What keeps appearing in your work? Where are you playing it safe? What would happen if you pushed past the predictable and gave yourself permission to become more curious?
Our mentorship will be highly individualized. We may work on composition, color, mixed-media techniques, abstraction, figurative work, developing a cohesive body of work, or strengthening your technical skills. But technique will always serve something larger: helping you develop confidence in your own visual language and learning how to articulate why you prefer that.
I believe artists grow through a combination of strong fundamentals, experimentation, thoughtful critique, curiosity, and a willingness to make work that sometimes fails spectacularly. I want my mentees to become better problem solvers, not painters who need someone else to tell them what to do next.
We will look closely at your work and identify patterns, strengths, habits, recurring imagery, creative roadblocks, and opportunities you may not recognize yet. I will challenge you to experiment with materials, surfaces, scale, composition, storytelling, and unexpected constraints. We may also explore how your personal interests, collections, experiences, curiosities, and obsessions can become meaningful source material rather than simply searching outside yourself for inspiration.
This mentorship is especially suited for emerging or intermediate painters who have some experience but feel they are still searching for their artistic identity. You might have solid skills but struggle to create cohesive work. You may rely too heavily on references or other artists for direction. You might have dozens of ideas but difficulty developing them. Or perhaps you simply know there is something more individual waiting to emerge in your work.
I am not interested in teaching you to paint like me.
I am interested in helping you discover your version of beautifully different or interesting, and giving you the tools, challenges, and encouragement to push that work past ordinary.
Mentorship Focus
- How to develop your own artist voice and learn to identify the recurring ideas, imagery, colors, marks, materials, and personal interests that can become the foundation of work that feels authentically yours, not a version of someone else’s.
- How to increase your problem solving and learn how to make stronger decisions when a painting isn’t working, move through creative blocks, evaluate possibilities, and experiment rather than waiting for someone to tell you the “right” answer.
- How to use the elements of art with intention to strengthen your understanding of color, composition, value, shape, texture, pattern, line, contrast, and visual movement so your technical choices support what you actually want the painting to communicate.
- How to build a brave, experimental painting practice by learning to take creative risks with mixed media, unusual surfaces, layering, abstraction, figurative work, scale, constraints, and unexpected combinations, while discovering which experiments genuinely belong in your evolving visual language.
- How to turn ideas into cohesive bodies of work. You’ll move beyond making isolated paintings by developing concepts, following threads of curiosity, recognizing connections between works, and building a collection that has both visual and conceptual continuity.
