WORKSHOP Description

Overthinking and perfectionism are two common challenges artists face. Did you know that you have innate creative wisdom, a style, and artistic voice already in you? Learning to trust your gut and intuition is the doorway to enormous artistic growth and confidence.

The practice of using “creative constraints” to turn off the over-thinking mind (left-brain) and fully engage the creative intuitive mind (right-brain) is powerful, fun, challenging and exciting, and will break down your creative barriers quickly.

Julie deBoer will guide you through her Creative Constraints Practice to quiet the overactive thinking mind, helping you to let go of perfectionism, and strengthen your intuitive creative voice.

By working within short time limits, using a variety of limited reference material, and other creative constraints, you’ll learn how to bypass over analyses and respond more naturally to color, value, and composition to create more authentically and uniquely.

Led by professional artist and mentor Julie deBoer, each session will offer a fun, supportive, and encouraging structure that will help you become less reliant on reference materials and painting things “right”. Together with the group, you will complete several small paintings in each session, training your eye to see essential relationships first, paint expressively, and leave the details for later.

As sessions progress you will begin moving away from copying towards interpreting your subjects with greater creative freedom.

Each session will include time for reflection and group discussion, allowing you to notice what you felt, observed, and learned through the process.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll feel more confident, less dependent on reference materials, and more trusting of your artistic instincts. You’ll leave with a simple, repeatable practice you can return to again and again as you grow and develop as an artist.

Instructor Bio

My life is art. It’s about the creation of art, the support of artists, and impacting the world positively through art. I believe in and am building a non-competitive community at Mastrius, where artists can grow their skills and pursue their passions together, because…

ART is powerful and purposeful. It is not about making pretty things to hang on the wall, to match the curtains. Art changes our perspective and opens us up to something much deeperhigher, and grander than ourselves.

Creating unique impressions of the world as I see and experience them, is life-giving to me, and it seems, to those who enjoy my work. I am a deep-welled person, sensitive in every way a person can be, which heightens my awareness and ability to connect with people through my art. Though it also makes life more painful, it also makes it more beautiful and I’m grateful for it.

My smooth, flowing, moving landscapes capture the interaction I experience with nature.

God says “the sky speaks, the heavens proclaim, even the rocks cry out, the mountains and hills break into singing, the trees of the forest sing for joy!” This is what I see glimpses of and hear whispers of when I’m in nature.

THIS is my JOY and PURPOSE in creating art, to translate my experience into a visual, inspiring, joy-filled, and powerful visual display.
