What you will learn in this mentorship
- “You have to know the rules to break the rules” is one of my favorite sayings, and I’m a huge fan of breaking the rules!
- In order to play and experiment we need to make sure our fundamentals are strong, so we’ll spend time making sure our values, compositions, colors, and drawings are strong. Then, we can take time to play with the fundamentals and push our skills and styles – whether it’s sticking a toe into abstraction or learning a new material or just breathing life into a favorite subject matter.
- In addition, I believe that it’s my job as a mentor to help you paint like you. We’ll focus on how to build self-critique skills so that experiments can be used to form a plan for your work. We’ll explore different ways of thinking of style and expression and composition and play with new ways for you to tell your story with your art. And finally, we can talk about different strategies to get the most out of studio time, learning to work with your own personal quirks and strengths.

- How to strengthen your artistic toolbox of fundamentals, like color, composition, and drawing.
- How to keep your studio sessions fresh with play and experimentation.
- How to use both play and fundamentals to overcome challenges like artistic blocks, a busy schedule, or a busy mind.
- How to capture on canvas the essence of the natural world – animals, landscapes, birds, flowers, and more
- How to use the tools of composition and storytelling to make your artwork even more personal to you and your style.
How This Mentorship Works
- Live online small-group mentorship
- Monthly two-hour session with your mentor where you’ll receive feedback, teaching, and personal support from your mentor
- Mentor assigns homework so you can practice the skills you’re learning and get feedback on your results
- Meet mid-month with your group for informal connection
