WORKSHOP Description
If you are experiencing frustration in rendering rushing water, this is the workshop for you!
Water is one of the most exciting – and challenging – subjects to paint. It moves, it crashes, it sparkles, and it constantly changes shape. In this live online workshop, Master Artist and Mentor Gaye Adams will guide you through a clear, practical approach to creating the illusion of tumbling and rushing water in your paintings.
Instead of guessing at whitewater or overworking the surface, you’ll learn how to understand and paint the underlying form that makes moving water believable.
Gaye will begin by showing you how to paint the “shape” of water, focusing on rendering the form within standing waves and waterfalls so your water feels structured and dimensional rather than chaotic. From there, she’ll explore how light interacts with water, breaking down the tonal values, colors, and temperature shifts that give whitewater its glow and energy. You’ll also learn how to handle paint and control edges in a way that brings movement and rhythm into your work, creating dynamic transitions that make your water feel alive.
This workshop will give you practical tools and a stronger understanding of how to translate motion onto a still surface. If you’ve ever struggled to make water feel convincing, this session will help you bring clarity, confidence, and that unmistakable rush to your paintings.

Supply List
This is a class for oil painters. Participants should have a simple palette for assignments, no fancy supplies needed. I will send out my palette colors before the workshop. 3-4 8X10 or 9X12″ canvases will be plenty for the workshop. Good quality brushes are a must, in a variety of sizes. I use primarily flats and brights.
Instructor Bio
I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. And it has always brought me a sense of satisfaction and joy.
My paintings are not difficult to understand; they are merely an exploration of that which brings me joy, and makes my heart skip a beat. That is the experience I wish to share with those who view my paintings – to stir the imagination and quicken the spirit, and transport to a wild and interesting place.
The single most compelling aspect of art making for me is creating the illusion of light with mere paint. It is always a challenge and is always engaging. That alchemy for me is pretty heady stuff.
In addition to painting, I enjoy a lovely connection with those looking to shorten their learning curve by studying with me. Turns out I really enjoy sharing my passion, and love to take students on my plein-air adventures in particular. Check out my workshops page if that is something that sounds appealing to you.
