You Will Learn:

Reference Preparation: How to analyze a photograph and adapt it for painting by focusing on composition, tonal value structure, and color balance.

Mastering Artificial Light: Unlike daylight, urban night scenes require a unique approach. We will cover how to paint streetlights and glowing windows, and how these light sources transform your color palette.

Atmosphere and Flow: Learn to manage watercolor’s natural fluidity to create “loose” and expressive paintings. You will integrate light and color to produce scenes full of mood and visual impact.

WORKSHOP Description

In this intensive 8 hours workshop, you will explore the art of capturing the city after dark. We will focus on the essential pillars of nocturnal watercolor: mastering artificial light, creating atmosphere, and understanding color theory for low-light settings. Through hands-on exercises, you will discover step-by-step techniques to paint high-impact scenes, ranging from the golden hour of sunset to the deep contrasts of the night.

– Cotton paper 36x26cm aprox

– Colors: Burnt sienna, Burnt umber, Ultramarine blue, Prussian blue, Cobalt blue, Ochre yellow, Cadmium yellow, Cadmium orange, Alizarim crimson red, Ultramarine violet, Viridian green, Lavanda.
– Optional: Masking fluid.

Instructor Bio

Chilean visual artist whose work focuses on the representation of his surroundings, exploring beauty through the aesthetic symbolism of the urban landscape, cultural heritage, and the social dimensions of the city.

An architect by training, he has furthered his practice with studies in aesthetic philosophy, art history, and earthen architectural heritage. His work has been exhibited in Chile, Italy, Mexico, Peru, and Slovenia. He has participated as a guest artist in international festivals such as Yaku Bogotá 2025 (Colombia) and Mi Arequipa 2023 (Perú). His accolades include first prize at the Mini Castra Festival (2020), the IWS Chile National Watercolor Competition (2020), and the Emerging Talent Award in Malaysia (2021).

In 2024, he founded Capa, an academy specializing in watercolor, where, alongside other leading figures of the national watercolor scene, he is dedicated to teaching and promoting the medium.
