WORKSHOP Description

In this workshop, I will start on a dry, dark ground and copy an Old Master landscape painting in order to show students the technique of working from dark to light in oil paint. This image is from George Inness, who was considered a tonalist, and I consider him a master of edges; so in this lesson we’ll hone in on the importance of the areas where one shape meets another. I will also discuss techniques for handling trees. I love teaching from art historical images because it gives me the opportunity to cover a lot of topics in one sitting!

🎥 WORKSHOP RECORDINGS available for 1-YEAR after the workshop ends!

🎥 NOTE: Workshop Recordings may be offered for sale at a future date at Mastrius, with the consent of the instructor.

High School, University, and College students get 20% OFF.  See FAQs at the bottom of page.

Supply List

I will use the following palette:
Titanium white
Cadmium yellow light (hue is fine, or any light yellow really)
Cadmium red (or any warm red)
Ultramarine blue
Sap green
Burnt Siena
Burnt umber
Ivory black

Any brushes that you have are fine. This image lends itself towards round or rounded brushes, but please use whatever you have.

I will be painting on a canvas textured paper that has been prepared with a layer of burnt umber oil paint, which will be dry when I begin my demo. If you’re pressed for time, you can absolutely use acrylic paint for this base layer . It dries much faster and will be fine for anyone who wants to join the workshop at the last minute.
