WORKSHOP Description

Do you admire landscape paintings that feel as though you could walk right into them? This effect isn’t about detail; it’s all about structure and atmosphere!

In this 6 hour workshop we’ll build the foundations for creating expansive landscapes full of depth!

We will begin by learning about the structures that organize space in a composition, such as spatial layers and horizon lines. These concepts are super helpful in understanding how objects relate to each other over vast distances.

Once we have our bearings, we’ll dive into an exploration of Atmospheric Perspective, and learn how our perception of objects is affected by the air that surrounds them. We’ll learn about how different weather conditions can influence the sense of atmosphere in a scene, and study the effects that elements like mist, rain, and smoke have on a landscape.

Painting isn’t just about understanding concepts though, and the way you physically apply paint too create brushstrokes and edges is super important to creating a sense of atmosphere in your work. I’ll create an oil painting as you watch that demonstrates these techniques, and I’ll show you how I mix gradients of color to create the feeling of depth in a scene.

The last couple hours of the workshop will give you time to create an atmospheric painting of your own, and I’ll be there to answer all of your questions!

Whether you’re interested in painting landscapes, city scapes, or imaginative vistas, the principles we’ll cover in this course will empower you to create a realistic sense of depth and distance in your work no matter what your subject matter is!

In the studio, Jordan uses his studies and photographic reference gathered in the wild to compose immersive paintings. He strives to communicate the power and beauty of his subjects through the use of dynamic compositions, expressive brushstrokes, and unexpected color contrasts.
