A strong understanding of the 7 elements of design is key to creating artwork that feels both dynamic and intentional. In this energizing live session, abstract painter and Mastrius mentor Marlene Lowden will offer a fresh perspective on these core concepts.
You'll learn to see your work with new eyes, diagnose what’s not working in a piece, and make intentional choices that elevate your compositions—no matter your subject or style. This isn’t about rules; it’s about tools that support your intuition and help you create with more freedom and impact.
Through inspiring examples and playful exercises, you’ll gain new insight into how the 7 elements of design…

…can be used to improve your work and make it more impactful.
You will learn:
- What the 7 elements of design are and how you can be using them more effectively
- Techniques for applying these elements in abstract and representational art
- Ways to build clarity & confidence in your compositions
- How to refresh your creative approach with intuitive exercises
Perfect for artists eager to strengthen their creative foundation. You’ll leave this session re-energized, with practical ideas to bring fresh perspective and renewed confidence to your next painting session.
There will be some interactive elements where Marlene will ask participants to join her for a few exercises and a bit of discussion.
Here are the supplies you will need to take part in the interactive portion of the event:
- 3 pieces of scrap paper (approximately 8.5 x 11)
- 4 different coloured markers, crayons, or pastels
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Approximately 15 - 20 different coloured pieces of paper cut in a variety of shapes (organic and geometric) from magazines, construction paper or scraps from studies.

“I’m the third generation of my family to grow up in a rural seaside town on the west coast of Canada; to say that the forest and the ocean are influential in my work would be an understatement. However, I’m not content to replicate nature. I’m an unconventional oil painter using stencils and spray paint like a street artist and markers like an illustrator. I create a puzzle to solve by using crisp lines, colours, textures and shapes that do not exist in the natural environment. The challenge then is to create unity that is aesthetically pleasing but not entirely comfortable. For me, a successful painting shows evidence of a struggle”.
