What you will learn in this mentorship
- I mentor in foundational principles of representational painting, with a focus on landscapes and still life subjects.
- I believe that it is important to constantly revisit these principles and approach them in new ways, no matter how accomplished an artist may be. These principles include; compositional design, light and shadow, value structure, atmospheric and linear perspective, edges, color temperature, and color saturation.
- It is my goal to help members of my group develop their ability to create naturalistic paintings that not only copy their reference, but improve upon it and create compelling work full of energy and life.
- My main medium is Oil, and I provide insight into it’s working properties. I discuss the differences between working on location en plein air and in the studio, and what these two working scenarios can achieve. I also delve into specific considerations for painting landscapes, including a basic understanding of geology, ecology, and meteorology to better portray realistic natural environments.
- More advanced students in the emerging category might be interested in help painting specific subjects such as trees, clouds, and rocks, and I am happy to provide this as these are my specialties. I also stress the importance of drawing as a foundation, as well the ways thumbnail drawings and color studies can be created as preparation for more involved studio paintings. I encourage members of my group to create numerous small paintings – often ‘Alla Prima’ – in order to learn more about specific concepts and see more rapid improvement than a single large multi-session painting could provide.
