WORKSHOP Description

This workshop will focus on painting florals in a loose and impressionistic style. Each session will open with discussion, a slide show and an assignment for homework.

When painting florals I try to capture the essence of what I see before me; the gesture of the arrangement, be it line, rhythm, and/or the flow of the composition in front of me. As artists we get caught up in trying to reproduce exact replicas of what we see, getting lost in the detailing, instead of trying to capture the soul of what is before you. Ask yourself this –What is it about this particular flower or still life that stirs me? Is it the colors? the line and movement? The intricate design? Or perhaps it is the play of light and shadows falling across the petals and leaves. This will be the focus of the workshop. The goal is to loosen you up and to help you see the big picture, not the details.

Some of the topics covered :

1. How to arrange floral compositions that work well to fit your canvas
2. Benefit of an underpainting
3. Blocking in the big simple shapes
4. Choosing background colors
5. Demystifying glass vases
6. Warm and cool colors
7. Mixing neutral Grays

Instructor Bio

Ann has spent most of her life painting in oils, both in studio and in the outdoors, en plein air. She has participated in and helped organize many plein air events throughout Canada during her career. Being primarily a landscape painter, Ann’s style of painting is very loose and impressionistic, characterized by thick oil paint, harmonious colour and visible brushstrokes. Most of her paintings depict the splendour of the natural landscape around us, from panoramic landscapes, florals and paintings of distinctive and unique trees. Her work is shown in galleries in Ontario, Alberta and B.C., and held in collections around the world. She is a Signature Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and has won numerous awards in various FCA shows and Plein Air Festivals. In recent years, teaching online workshops and mentorships , in addition to in-person workshops, has become a large part of Ann’s practice. Ann spends most of her time working and teaching at her studio in Lake Country, B.C.
