WORKSHOP Description
This paint-along workshop is about helping you unlock the power of layering to create paintings that feel rich, atmospheric, and full of light. You’ll be guided step-by-step through a structured yet creative process, with demonstrations, discussion, and plenty of time to apply each technique to your own piece.
We will use a ‘paint along’ format and will begin with an imprimatura (a thin, transparent base layer) and paint a grisaille (a monochromatic underpainting) wet into that wet initial glaze. This stage will help you establish strong composition and tonal values, giving your painting a solid foundation. Once your grisaille is resolved and dry, we will begin adding layers of transparent glazes and opaque colour to develop depth, luminosity, and visual interest.
In this workshop our subject matter will be semi-abstract, atmospheric seascapes. And the techniques that will be taught are fabulous for whichever genre you are wanting to paint. We will make use of both palette knife and brushwork with demos and practice.
You will come away with new techniques and information about layering and adding luminosity. Lots to add to your toolbox that you can apply to your very own style and signature of painting.

Supply List
This class is great for either acrylics or oils.
You will need a canvas or board in the size range of 9×12, 11×14 or 12×16.
You will also need a MEDIUM. With acrylics you can slow down the drying time a bit by using about 40% Acrylic Slow Drying Medium (by Winsor & Newton) or Acrylic Glazing Liquid. Or you could use up to 15% retarder medium, which is about a 1:6 or 1:7 ratio, and the rest being your acrylic medium of choice. For oils my medium of choice is LIQUIN made by Winsor + Newton.
For the first session, just three colours of paint – White, (I like to use Titanium White-alkyd formula) and Black, (Mars Black if you have it) and a transparent orange such as Transparent Orange by Gamblin, or Indian Yellow.
Second sitting – Nickel Azo Yellow, Phthalo Blue, Cobalt Blue, Titanium White.
Third sitting – Phthalo Green, Titanium White, Cobalt Blue, Transparent Brown Iron Oxide.
Brushes: a large inexpensive brush for applying the initial glaze as well as small and medium sized brushes.
Palette Knives: a small palette knife as well as at least one regular size will be great.
Instructor Bio
Yvonne Reddick is known for her skillful use of layers of transparent and opaque pigments to achieve paintings that appear lit from within. Communicating her heart with her paintbrush, she passionately conveys on canvas what is bubbling up inside of her. As each layer of colour requires time to dry she moves from one creation to the next, having several paintings in process in her studio.
While spending time travelling in Italy, Reddick was emotionally stirred and deeply inspired by the beauty of the old world paintings and sculptures, particularly those from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Accepting an invitation from renowned Canadian artist David Langevin, Yvonne spent several years studying under him in the master-apprentice tradition.
Since 2007 when she was invited to be represented by some of the Fine Art Galleries in Canada, she has been working full time at her craft. She continues to study and apply the techniques of the European Old Masters such as Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Titian and Vermeer.
Reddick paints a wide variety of genres. Initially her signature subject matter being still life, her famous ‘pear’ paintings and intimate scenes of a latte or cup of tea with a newspaper or book quickly became widely popular. For the past several years her landscape paintings, evoking a variety of exquisite vistas from a warm, vibrant sunset to the deep blues and greens of the ocean, have also been collected internationally.
