WORKSHOP Description
In recent years, gouache has become a go-to medium for many artists, offering a way to capture quick renderings for producing larger paintings. However, because of the flexibility and forgiveness that gouache offers, artists of all kinds are increasingly using it as a final medium for smaller works. Working from provided photo references, students will learn to manipulate the lusciousness of gouache and explore the mobility of this medium, which provides opportunities for successful in-studio and plein air painting.

Paints:
Gouache: Holbein (my fav), M. Graham (honey-based and also love it), and Windsor Newton are best brands. Holbein sells a set of 5mml tubes that pretty much has all the colors you need for the workshop. I would buy a large tube of Holbein Permanent White.
Using a quality gouache will make or break your experience. Cheaper gouache tends to crack.
Here are the colors I use for future use (the paint set will be fine for now):

Palette well:
I use a gouache well palette box that stores all the paint with 24 colors. I use a small tempered piece of glass that has the edges taped for mixing colors.

Brushes:
I use watercolor brushes but Creative Mark has a nice set of brushes that includes a flat and rounds. in addition, purchase a smaller flat, 1/4” to 3/8” to compliment the set. Princeton flat ¼” brush works well.

Instructor Bio
E. Melinda Morrison is an award-winning Texas portrait and figurative artist with more than twenty-five years of professional experience. Her work reflects a respect for traditional craftsmanship, while also embracing experimentation and personal narrative. Focused on figures, portraits, and animals, Melinda creates intimate, emotionally resonant paintings, working mainly in oils, gouache, and egg tempera. She often combines these media for unique effects, oil as an underpainting and finishing with egg tempera to achieve luminous, controlled surfaces with delicate modeling. This method allows her to expand each medium’s potential while maintaining clarity and structure.
Melinda’s strong technical foundation was shaped through formal education and years of dedicated study. Studying Fine Art and graduating with an art degree at the University of Texas, she later continued her education at the Art Students League of Denver, dedicating four years to intensive study that strengthened her command of the figure and portraiture. Early in her career, Melinda achieved multi-gallery representation, an important milestone that helped establish her professional presence. Over the next 17 years, she held more than 8 one-woman exhibitions at a gallery in Santa Fe, a city known for its vibrant and discerning art scene. In addition, she participated in numerous two-person and group exhibitions in Denver as well as national and regional shows.
Today, as a mid-career artist, Melinda continues to evolve creatively and sustain a strong professional practice. Her work is collected across the United States and internationally. Key achievements include being featured in major art magazines, winning awards at the Members Only Portrait Society of America Show, National Oils and Acrylic Society (NOAPS), Sedona International Art Competition, Western Regional Oil Painters of America, and the Fall online OPA showcase. Notably, she earned Honorable Mention at the 6th International Figurative Show at the Salmagundi Art Club in New York City in 2024 and received the New Entrant Award at the 2025 Bosque Art Classic.
As a sought-after teacher, she teaches in her studio in Fort Worth and in local classes, and she travels for her workshops. She also hosts workshops with other nationally known artists in Fort Worth. Melinda is currently represented by Texas Treasures Fine Art in Boerne, TX, and Jack Meier Gallery in Houston, TX.
