What you will learn in this mentorship
- This group is focused on helping artists adventure beyond the learning techniques and drive towards discovering an artistic voice. Through watercolour, observation, experimentation and creative conversation, we will explore how everyday experiences, places, memories, light, atmosphere and emotions can become the starting point for a fine artwork. The focus will not be on producing a particular style or following a fixed formula, but on understanding what makes each artist different and learning how to express that individuality with greater confidence. We will look at the creative process from the initial idea through to the finished work, discussing composition, colour, value, perspective, mark-making and the use of light, while always keeping the artist’s personal interpretation at the centre. Participants will be encouraged to question what they see rather than simply reproduce it, to simplify where necessary, and to make conscious creative decisions. Watercolour is a wonderfully expressive medium because it allows light, transparency, movement and spontaneity to become part of the artwork itself. The aim of the group is therefore to use the medium not only as a technical tool, but as a means of personal expression.
- The main core idea is that every artist has something personal to say. My role as a mentor will be to encourage, challenge and guide participants while allowing them the freedom to develop in their own direction. We will share work openly, discuss successes and difficulties, learn from one another and create an environment where experimentation is welcomed and mistakes are considered part of the creative journey. Particular attention will be given to developing confidence, learning how to critique one’s own work constructively and understanding when a painting needs refinement and when it is better to leave it alone. We will also explore the wider life of an artist: developing a consistent practice, finding inspiration in everyday life, presenting work, building a body of work and communicating the story behind it. My own philosophy is that art is full of poetry, and that poetry does not necessarily have to be written or spoken; it can be found in light, silence, movement, colour and emotion. I would like this group to become a place where artists can slow down, observe more deeply, experiment freely and discover how their own experiences can inform their work. Ultimately, the goal is not simply to paint better, but to become more confident, thoughtful and authentic artists.
