WORKSHOP Description

Have you been wondering how to take your paintings to the next level? Join me and learn to build paintings that highlight your subjects and keep your viewers engaged through compelling compositions!

In this two day workshop, we will explore the principles and possibilities of composition – from essential fundamentals of design to more advanced concepts such as focal points and structural arrangements called compositional stems. After explaining these essential concepts, I’ll show you how you can use a single reference image as a basis for developing multiple unique compositions, and then set you loose to create your own!

On the second day of the workshop, I’ll show you how color and value contrasts can be used to draw attention to certain parts of your painting, and we’ll learn how to strike a balance between detail and simplification to make a more compelling design. I’ll create a painting as you watch that demonstrates all of these ideas, and encourage you to create scenes that are far more than the sum of their parts!

Whether you’re interested in painting landscape, still life, or figures, these key compositional concepts will empower you to create dynamic and powerful designs no matter what your subject matter is!

Instructor Bio

Jordan K. Walker is an award winning artist based in Eugene, Oregon. He is a member of the Oil Painters of America and the California Art Club. His work explores the complex and varied landscapes of the American West.

Jordan’s paintings have been shown in galleries and museums across the United States, including the National Museum of Wildlife Art, Steamboat Art Museum, CFD Old West Museum, Maryhill Museum of Art, and the Bowers Museum. Many of his paintings are held in private collections around the globe.

With painting gear in hand, Jordan hikes through the wild spaces of western North America and creates studies to better understand his surroundings. Intense examples of light and atmosphere, as well as a sense of the geological timescale of his favorite subjects are important elements in his work. He is continually drawn to the timeless drama of stormy skies, churning Pacific tides, steep alpine slopes, and ancient forests. In the studio, Jordan uses his studies and photographic reference gathered in the wild to compose immersive paintings. He strives to communicate the power and beauty of his subjects through the use of dynamic compositions, expressive brushstrokes, and unexpected color contrasts.
