WORKSHOP Description
In a rut? Time for something different! Cold wax is an exciting departure; if you haven’t yet explored this, I hope you’ll dive into this fascinating impasto medium. We’ll explore the use of cold wax medium in oil painting, using both additive and subtractive techniques. Cold wax lends itself best to abstracted landscapes, impressionistic compositions, and, of course, palette knife work. Be prepared to work from photos as well as from life, weather permitting, and learn to enjoy this useful and beautiful approach.

Supply List
Oil paint,
Wipes,
Rigid supports which are fairly smooth (e.g. oil primed linen and gesso board are ideal);
Gamblin or Dorland cold wax,
Palette knives (offset and angled flats are best but any reasonable assortment will do);
Drawing materials,
Cloths for wiping,
Small scrapers (old credit cards will do) and brayers (if you have them),
Small squeegee and any other texture making tools and even additives you can think of (textured cloth, net bags from fruit, paper with writing, old photos on thin paper, thin leaves….)
Instructor Bio
Casey Cheuvront studied (among other things) drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics at CSUF California, and has been influenced (and instructed) by current artists like Douglas Fryer, Bill Cramer, Dave Santillanes, Alan Wolton, Matt Smith, Stanley Kurth, Mary Bentz Gilkerson, Gretchen Lopez, Casey Klahn, and Camille Przewodek.
Her work is informed not only by formal study but also by her ongoing plein air habit and life-long appreciation of the natural world, established through a “feet-on-the trail” connection over many years.
Her outdoor education began when she was very young, accompanying her father on long treks, fishing, hiking, bow-hunting, archery exhibitions and professional competitive archery shoots. Later, she backpacked her way across the Sierras and the Uintas, flew California peaks in her hang glider, skied Utah powder, and mountain biked many happy trails in the Arizona desert.
Cheuvront’s pieces reveal an ongoing fascination with the Western and Southwestern wilderness, whether reflected in a local trail or a remote lake only reachable by a long backpack. Her enthusiasm is translated into a vibrant, modern palette and energetic, dynamic brushwork.
Look for studio and plein air works showcasing the Yosemite Valley and highlands, the Sonoran desert, and the red rocks of Sedona.
