Are you ready to take your painting to the next level, literally? Step outside the box and learn how to use a variety of acrylic GEL MEDIUMS to create dynamic, sculptural, 3D effects in your work. This video demonstrates how David using acrylic gel mediums to create his iconic ‘Tree Portraits’.

You will learn how to apply paint and mediums to create the maximum effect without compromising the VIBRANCY and BRILLIANCE of your colors.

I first starting using acrylics in earnest when I decided that I wanted to create thick 3D sculpted texture effects in my paintings.  With oil paints, that is not permanent, and as an emerging artist, the idea of using $300 worth of paint on a $500 painting didn’t make sense either.  After doing some inquiries I discovered that acrylic paint manufacturers were making ‘gel mediums’ that could be used to make collages and create dramatic texture effects in the composition without compromising the integrity of the painting and price point was also attractive.

At the time there were only two types of gel mediums that I could find; a ‘regular’ gel medium, and molding, or modeling paste.  I used these two products in many of my first acrylic landscape paintings and ‘Tree Portraits’.  Now, there are dozens of different kinds of gel mediums each with their own properties and textures.  These days I will often use 6 or more in a single painting.

I just completed this latest collection of Tree Portraits with all the gel mediums that I think make them so much more captivating.  You can use these various gel mediums to create interesting and engaging effects with almost any kind of subject or composition, landscape paintings, abstracts, still life, florals,… and they are perfect for doing collage work.

Meet David

David Langevin wanted to be an artist from a very young age and so when I graduated high school I went on to study Fine Arts in college and university. I did not learn a lot about how to be a better artist or painter, and they taught us nothing about the professional life of an artist and how to make a living in the trade.
