From Inspiration to Resolution

Ever struggled with bringing a painting from start to finish?  You’re not alone. Join us for a thoughtful panel discussion that explores how a painting actually comes together, from the first spark of an idea to the final brushstroke.

Mastrius Mentors Sara Sisun and Laurie Goldstein-Warren will share how they move from inspiration to resolution, drawing directly from their own studio practices and lived experience as working artists.

Rather than focusing only on technique, Sara and Laurie will show how meaningful paintings are shaped long before paint hits the canvas

You’ll learn how to:

  • Find authentic inspiration and ideas for new work
  • Develop a strong concept and visual story before the first sketch
  • Build a process that bridges spontaneity with structure
  • Stay connected to your vision throughout the painting

Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your approach, this panel will offer practical insights you can take straight back to the studio. Bring your curiosity and your questions and leave with a clearer path forward.

Meet Sara Sisun

Charcoal | Drawing | Oil

I started painting at the Art Students League of Denver when I was six years old. I entered the creaking wooden doors, saw the paint splatters on the floor, and knew I wanted to be an artist.

I had a teacher who said, “You have to paint the thing you cannot say,” this poetic, mysterious approach to painting, for me, is apt for the materiality of the techne used. As a child, I was moved by the simplicity, ineffability, and inevitability I felt upon seeing certain works of art. This feeling is what I hope to give my viewer.

Sara Sisun (b. 1986, Denver, Colorado) is an oil painter and visual artist based in Boulder, Colorado. She received a BA in Art Practice from Stanford University in 2009, an MFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute under a full tuition fellowship in 2011, and an MA in Art History from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 2018.

She is a recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant, the Alpine Fellowship and the Audrey Beard Scholarship for graduate study in Art History.

Her work is included in the public collections of Kaiser Permanente and in the private collection of Soledad O’Brien. She is currently an Assistant Professor and Head in the department of Foundations and Fine Art at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design.

Meet Laurie Goldstein-Warren

Acrylic| Mixed Media | Watercolor

Originally from New York, Laurie now lives in West Virginia. Laurie has always had a love for the arts. Dance was the first art love she had. She danced with the Rochester Academy of Performing Arts in New York. Later she went to study cosmetology and competed in fantasy hair competitions.

While still in New York, Laurie and her brother, Todd Rohnke, painted murals in businesses and private residences. After moving from New York to West Virginia, she discovered a passion for watercolor after joining a small art guild in the next town. These artists taught her the joy of watercolor.

She practiced her art every day and has painted over 1500 paintings to date. She went on to study at many workshops with master artists.

In 2005, she began to find our own voice in watercolor and wants to assist other artists to find that joy. She began traveling and teaching and has made friends across the world because of watercolor. It is all about the journey.
