WORKSHOP Description
For most artists, the time spent in your studio is the best part of your day. Working with your materials, developing new ideas, practicing, learning, making something that didn’t exist before – that’s what you were put on earth to do. Even in those times when you don’t like what you’re doing, or worse, when you can’t get into the studio to do it, you know where you belong.
For most artists, the day also comes when you start to feel it would be nice if someone other than you could see the results. All those ideas, that production, sometimes even that beauty – it’s worth putting out into the world.
But for most of us, that’s easier said than done. Public galleries and museums have reduced budgets; commercial galleries often seem to be full.
This workshop will teach you how to create exhibitions that don’t rely so much on other people. From possible exhibition venues, to choosing your body of work, to the mechanics, the promotion, the celebration, we’ll talk about it all.
My art career spans 40 years and includes regional, national and international exhibitions in more than 30 solo and two-person exhibitions as well as over 50 group shows. I’ve also worked as exhibition curator, artist mentor, artist residency coordinator, exhibition adjudicator, and art gallery owner. Over that time, there’s almost nothing exhibition-related I haven’t encountered. It will be my privilege to help encourage the growth of your own life as an artist.

Instructor Bio
Laureen Marchand lives in the southwest corner of Saskatchewan, in Val Marie, at the gateway to Grasslands National Park. Inspired by the region’s subtlety and fragile beauty, her paintings reflect on the daily experiences we take for granted. Though these paintings look realistic, they’re not just about surface appearances. Laureen believes that is she can paint something or someone so it looks the most like itself, it might help the viewer see not just the painting’s subject, but their own relationship to it. Laureen holds a BFA from the University of Alberta and an MFA from the University of Saskatchewan. She has in more than 30 solo and two-person exhibitions as well as over 50 group shows, in Canada and internationally. Her paintings have been recognized by the Saskatchewan Arts Board and the Canada Council, are held in many public and private collections, and have been represented in exhibition catalogues and reviewed in newspapers and magazines. Laureen Marchand has been artist in residence at the Leighton Colony/Banff Centre for the Arts, the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland, and the Ragdale Foundation in Illinois, among others. She has lived and painted in Canada and Ireland. Laureen’s current exploration is of ideas related to the rewilding of human imagination. This isn’t intended to be at the scale of some of the extraordinary environmental rewilding restoration endeavours taking place worldwide. Rewilding imagination is more like what people do when they rewild their gardens. We understand that we need both untamed and domestic elements in our lives and in doing so, look for ways to allow both to thrive.
