WORKSHOP Description

Time management for artists? Wait – don’t run away! Because it’s also about deciding what matters to you. About how you’re going to get it done and feel good about it. Managing energy, managing expectations, managing distraction – they’re all part of managing your time.

For many artists, even the words “time management” sound restrictive. They sound so corporate, so un-creative, so lacking in any understanding of what you as an artist really do.

And yet, sometimes you feel overwhelmed.

There’s so much to do. You ask yourself if you’re really creating as much as you could. If your art career might get more traction if you had more time to work on it. If there’s a way to feel less at the end of the day like you didn’t do what you wanted. And more like the productive and fulfilled artist you set out to be.

If you ask yourself questions like these, you definitely aren’t alone. Managing multiple expectations, structuring your daily life so it supports regular art time, and feeling satisfied with your choices are ongoing struggles for many artists.

The good news? You can use your creative brain to figure all this out. You can ask different questions, questions that will help you be your best artist self without so much struggle. This workshop will help you do that.

Be prepared to do some pre-workshop homework. The assignment will be provided to you 10 days in advance.

Instructor Bio

Laureen Marchand lives in the southwest corner of Saskatchewan, in Val Marie, at the gateway to Grasslands National Park. Inspired by the region’s subtlety and fragile beauty, her paintings reflect on the daily experiences we take for granted. Though these paintings look realistic, they’re not just about surface appearances. Laureen believes that is she can paint something or someone so it looks the most like itself, it might help the viewer see not just the painting’s subject, but their own relationship to it. Laureen holds a BFA from the University of Alberta and an MFA from the University of Saskatchewan. She has in more than 30 solo and two-person exhibitions as well as over 50 group shows, in Canada and internationally. Her paintings have been recognized by the Saskatchewan Arts Board and the Canada Council, are held in many public and private collections, and have been represented in exhibition catalogues and reviewed in newspapers and magazines. Laureen Marchand has been artist in residence at the Leighton Colony/Banff Centre for the Arts, the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland, and the Ragdale Foundation in Illinois, among others. She has lived and painted in Canada and Ireland. Laureen’s current exploration is of ideas related to the rewilding of human imagination. This isn’t intended to be at the scale of some of the extraordinary environmental rewilding restoration endeavours taking place worldwide. Rewilding imagination is more like what people do when they rewild their gardens. We understand that we need both untamed and domestic elements in our lives and in doing so, look for ways to allow both to thrive.
