Oil | Watercolour
While attending Principia College, I was introduced to plein air watercolor painting and the bold color and strong design of the California Regionalist Watercolor Tradition. My early career capitalized on watercolor’s portability with road trips in the Western United States and international travel. My mid-career focus is the vernacular architecture, landscapes, and gardens of my home state, California.
Watercolor is a major facet of my art career: my paintings are in the permanent collection of The Hilbert Museum and The Buck Collection; feature articles in magazines; exhibit with national and regional watercolor societies; served as juror and judge for watercolor shows, and taught watercolor workshops.
I’ve also attended atelier workshops with the goal to refine my drawing skills, deepen my understanding of composition, values, and learn anatomy. I’ve attended oil painting workshops and expanded my understanding of light and color. As a result, my paintings have subtler color and value transitions and gives me the flexibility to express my ideas in either watercolor or oil, and participate in a wider range of exhibitions, and garner recognition for my work.
In summary: I have lots of experiences to share with you, of the highs and lows of being an artist, and I’m ready to share my resources and ideas to help you on your unique path!

About The Artist
Southern California native, Carolyn Lord (1956- ) was introduced to the California Regionalist Watercolor Tradition by James Green while attending Principia College in Elsah, IL. Her Liberal Arts studies included Botany and Architectural History, which have been enduring motifs throughout her artwork.
Lord’s early career capitalized on watercolor’s portability with road trips in the Western United States as well as international trips to Italy, Denmark, Brazil, Virgin Islands, Mexico, Polynesia, and France. Lord’s mid-career work has been focused on the vernacular architecture, landscapes and gardens of her home state California. As her painting career developed, Lord also started painting in oil, and recently some of the aesthetic aspects of Tonalism, and Impressionism are seen in her art work.
American Artist, Watercolor Artist, Plein Air Magazine, Savvy Painter, and Learn to Paint podcasts have profiled Lord’s career and artwork. She is a Signature member of California Art Club, National Watercolor Society, and American Women Artists. Lord has been in numerous solo and group shows, and plein air events.
